Five Things Friday #42

Happy Friday!

I want to thank you guys so much for all your heartfelt comments on yesterday’s post.  I really appreciate everyone weighing in with their own experiences and thoughts.

So yesterday was beautiful, but the forecast for the next few days is a thunderbolt.  Neil and I are finally done with the wedding madness so this weekend we are here in Chicago and it would be really nice to get back up to the Green City Market again now that it is back outside.  Looks like we will have to reevaluate on a day to day basis. Fingers crossed for decent weather!

To kick off the weekend lets take a look at my Five Things Friday–some of the things I am loving this week!

1. 90s Disney by Todrick Hall

This is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen (make sure to close the little ad that pops up when it starts so you can actually see it all). My sister sent it to me a couple weeks ago and I had intended on including it in last week’s post but totally forgot.

Todrick Hall and Shoshana Bean turn Disney songs into 90s-style harmonies. Watch the whole thing to experience the magic of The Little Mermaid, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. It’s so great.

2. Spring!

I think I am a little premature again since next week is supposed to be raining and in the 50s, but I’m going to say that I am loving the one warm day we had here this week. It was in the 80s and I was able to lay out in the sun. I am super pale from months of hibernating under all the clothes I own, so I could only stay out about 30 minutes before I felt my skin start to burn, but you’d better believe I’ll be back.

3. The Opposite Of Loneliness

I kept seeing this book everywhere and each time I would pick it up and read a little more. The Opposite of Loneliness is a collection of fiction and nonfiction essays by Marina Keegan, who tragically died in a car accident shortly after her graduation from Yale. Her writing was applauded by many of her professors and was just starting to gain major traction when her life was tragically cut short.

I love reading good writing by people so young and I’m glad I picked it up last weekend on my trip back to VA. It is a great, quick read, but definitely a little bittersweet.

4. Daiya Cheesecake

I know I just wrote about it on Tuesday, but I have been slowly enjoying the one that I bought on the way home over the course of this week.  An entire cheesecake is 4 servings, but I cut it into 8 and have been savoring each one. Wednesday night I enjoyed it while watching The Sopranos and yesterday I ate one while writing this because how could I not after looking at that picture??

5. Lululemon Run Club

My friend Lauren works at Lululemon and let me know that their run club was starting up for the season. Since the store is super close to my work, I figured I would stop in after teaching last night. The club meets every Tues and Thurs at 6 pm and Saturday at 7 am.  Tuesday is a tempo workout, Thursday is speed work, and Saturdays are 60-min long runs.

Since it was Thursday, we ran from the store to a local track for some speed work. We warmed up by jogging a couple laps around the track and then doing some dynamic stretching.  Once the warm up was done, we ran 5 x 400 (400 = 1 lap around the track). We split each 400 (lap) into 200m of 5 K pace (think: a pace at which you aren’t able to carry on a conversation with another person) and 200m of a jog so that we could get our heart rate back down.

After the 5 x 400, everyone ran a final mile that was timed.  Since this is the first speed work workout of the season, we will use this time to compare with later times throughout the season and see how we improve. Mine was 8:27 which I am happy with because it’s still on par with what my pace was when I was running more a couple weeks ago. Good to know I haven’t slowed down! The humidity was killer so if it had been a little cooler I may have done even better!

I’m not sure how often I will be able to make it, but definitely if I am teaching a class on those days it would be a great pit stop on the way home!

I hope everyone has a great weekend and a Happy Mother’s Day to my mom since I can’t be there for real!

Also, I just realized that the Chicagoland Half Marathon is next weekend and I STILL haven’t run over 7 miles. Hmm.

The weather in London is supposed to be nice this weekend! This is good, as I have a 12 mile run in mind for tomorrow, and then am going to support friends in a half marathon on Sunday and then we’ll have a picnic. All this would suck if it rained, so fingers crossed 🙂

Favourite thing from this week – running past Big Ben and Houses of Parliament on the day of the UK general election. I can only presume all the media were waiting to catch a glimpse of me passing by….

I hope you had good weather!

I would love such a scenic route! I bet now you’re famous with all that media attention.

Totally. I have to see about run club bc I have my half this weekend so I may have to do a longer run on my own. I also have 10 Hardpressed sessions I need to use within 30 days so I have a feeling that’s going to be my life for the next month :/

I just looked that up and added it to my cart. Anything with an intro by Brene Brown is right up my alley!

I have seriously been loving this weather. Except for the fact that I’ve been stuck inside at work for it, haha. All of the spring flowers have been making me so happy. Tulips are some of my very favorite flowers, so this time of year is always a favorite for me. That and the couple weeks when the trees are really changing in the fall. If only I could pause time… 🙂

Hi Erin, we’re supposed to have beautiful spring weather! I need to try the Daiya cheesecake. Yum! I’m going to check out the book the next time I’m at B&N.

    Have an awesome weekend!

The cheesecake is awesome and so is the book. That’s actually the first place I saw it so I know it’s there 🙂

I love that 90’s Disney mashup! Isn’t he so talented?

And wow, I need to read that book. I remember reading about her writing after she died tragically. I love that her writing is being memorialized for future generations to read!

      I know it’s so great!

It was definitely a bittersweet book but worth reading 🙂
