Five Things Friday #65

I can’t believe another week has gone by already! I’m also sad because I feel like December is speeding by which means I won’t be able to live in magical holiday land for as long as I’d like. One of my goals for the rest of the month is to be mindful of every day so that I don’t feel like it’s passed me by all at once.

I have to work again this weekend, but only for a couple hours each day. I am also teaching a group fitness bootcamp in Lincoln Park this Saturday at 11 am, so if you want to come (do!), you can find out more information and sign up through the link here.

To wrap up the week, I’m sharing with you some of my favorite things from the past seven days. Make sure to leave some of yours in the comments!

1. Opal Apples from Trader Joe’s

I like to read the Trader Joe’s flyer when it comes in the mail like an old lady and this time I read about their new selection of Opal apples. Normally I am only a Jazz apple snob (another amazing find from Trader Joe’s more than five years ago), but the description was enticing enough for me to pick some up. Plus, apples that cost $1.19 a piece? They MUST be good.

Opal apples are a cross between a Topaz and a Golden Delicious and are resistant to browning. That means you can cut them up and they will stay nice and fresh, making them great for parties and spreads. They are also flavorful which is a big necessity for me in an apple—I hate mealy, watery apples. I still think Jazz are my favorites, but these rank pretty highly up there. They are also huge so be prepared to fill up on apple.

2. Nike’s Riverwalk Pop-Up

Every week here in Chicago, Nike holds free workout classes and runs around the city. This week they decided to erect a gigantic barge for open air workouts right near my house. I admit that I knew about it, but I was too lazy to sign up online (classes fill up quickly), so I didn’t actually get a chance to work out in it. The point was to show that we fitness fanatics here in Chicago aren’t afraid of the cold, but that kind of backfired since it has been in the high 50s most of this week.

Hopefully they extend the opportunity by another week since it seems a waste to only have it up for a couple of days.

3. The Weather

Speaking of warm workouts, the weather here has been fantastic this week. The sun only came out in full force once, but the past two days the temperatures neared 60 degrees. I’ll take that for as long as I can.

4. French Toast Cardamom Tea from David’s Tea

I never would have gotten this tea if it hadn’t been for the delicious eggnog latte that I had last week from David’s Tea. I’ve been having some every day blended with the Saigon Chai that I also picked up from there.

The sad news to report is that David’s is no longer serving eggnog lattes for the rest of the season. According to the employee I accosted for more information, they underestimated the popularity of the drink and ran out of eggnog. I like to think that it was my raving review on Instagram that caused everyone to rush out and buy one, and now I am regretting sharing this secret with the world.

5. The Wire

The Wire has been one of my favorite shows for a long time, but unfortunately I watched most of it during the time when my addiction was ramping up. I stopped watching somewhere in Season Three and never finished the series, but I did manage to stop using and get clean during that time. If you know my story, continuing to watch a show about heroin use in Baltimore was not the best decision in my early recovery, so it went unfinished for more than five years.

I’ve wanted to finish it so many times, but never really felt ready to sit down and get back into it. It brought up a lot of old memories, feelings, and situations that I felt were better left alone. This week I was looking around on Amazon Prime and saw they were all there and didn’t feel such a visceral reaction to it anymore. I finally finished Season Three and started on Season Four and so far so good. It’s really a fantastic show and I’m so glad I can put the time into finishing it!

That’s all I’ve got for this week! I hope you have a wonderful weekend and I’ll check back in on Monday. Feel free to follow along with my weekend on Instagram since I’m always taking pictures like a crazy fool.

Questions:

  • What are some of your favorite things this week?
  • Is there a show series that you never finished?
  • What’s your favorite apple?

  1. I love seeing your pictures of Chicago. It reminds me of my home in Milwaukee, although I don’t miss it this time of year. I do miss the people I won’t see for Christmas. As for me, my favorite snack for the week is: Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edamame. I picked up a bag of the wasabi when I was Christmas shopping last week, and it was amazing! The wasabi has this brain-freeze effect, and I’m always a fan of spicy. But if you’d prefer the plain, they’re probably delicious too!

    1. Those sound great! I love spice but more like pepper spice and not the wasabi kind. I think I have some old wasabi edamame buried away somewhere haha
