Happy first day of 2016!
I hope you had a great New Year’s Eve and can relax today. Last night was pretty low key and we stayed inside because outdoors was a madhouse. This was the first year that Chicago held its event “Chi-Town Rising” with music, food, and a giant star that rose up to count down to midnight. It was held almost across the street from us, so the streets were packed and I wanted nothing to do with that. I’ll take sweatpants and the couch over that any day.
To wrap up the week, here are five of my favorite things from the past seven days. Make sure to leave some of yours in the comments and let me know how your NYE went! This weekend is low key as well and may involve more exploring in order to report back to you on Monday.
I’m always on the lookout for delicious food in the city. For awhile I traveled around looking for sweets—the best donuts, the best chocolate chip cookies, etc. Now I seem to be on the hunt for the best coffee shops. My go-to is normally a decaf espresso, but that doesn’t photograph as well as beautifully crafted lattes, so I’ve been trying new and unique drinks at various shops. Luckily, most places have almond milk since I try and steer clear of dairy, but when I’m confronted with something as magical as this eggnog latte, I go hard or go home.
2. HONY Stories
Remember when I told Neil that I wanted him to get me something for Christmas that was a surprise? Along with a couple other awesome books, he brought home this Humans of New York: Stories. I’ve followed their Facebook account for some time now and I love that they’ve compiled all of these photos and stories into one awesome book. It’s definitely a great coffee table selection if you’re looking for one and I’ve been periodically reading a few pages every time I sit down on the couch.
3. Spicy Olive Oil and Sea Salt
My family knows me quite well. It may be because I talk about how much I love spice here on the blog, but both my sister and my mom sent me some variation of fire for my mouth. My sister sent me a citrus habanera olive oil and my mom sent me a collection of spicy salts from The Spice Lab. I used both of them immediately and love that I can make everything hotter and torture Neil with my predilection for things that set your mouth on fire.
4. Perfect Bars
I went through a long phase of eating Perfect Bars as I tend to do with foods I like, but after I phased out, I forgot about them. I stocked up on some bars the other day at the store in case I need last minute snacks and remembered to pick up some of these. I forgot how delicious they are and I can’t stop eating them. Almond butter is by far my favorite, but I’d go to peanut butter in a pinch.
5. Nike Free Flyknit 4.0
I’ve wanted these shoes for a couple months now and got them for Christmas. Since I’m not doing much running anymore, I don’t have to worry about finding a dedicated running shoe and going through the fitting process again. Most of my workouts are high-intensity and I’ve been working on strength training and dabbling in Crossfit. These shoes are perfect for all of those things, the only problem is that walking in the city right now means avoiding puddles and dirty snow. For now I’m going to keep them inside at my building’s gym so I can keep them nice for as long as possible!
