Building healthier habits is something that takes time, dedication, and commitment. If it’s not something you already do, it may not come naturally to you. It’s taken me many years to learn healthier habits, and the learning process has been up and down for most of it. I will always have to work on finding balance, but it’s something I’ve decided is important to me, so I continue to work on it.
Since exercise has been huge in my recovery and in my life in general, I wanted to share the following five tips for ways you can start making small changes in your routine today in order to help make fitness a priority.
Make a commitment
It’s much easier to talk yourself out of commitments made to yourself versus those made to another person. Make plans to exercise with a friend or sign up for a company health challenge if you see one come up. It’s harder to back out of commitments if someone else is depending on you.
Make it a priority
As I’ve mentioned before, I schedule all my clients and writing around when I want to work out. Exercise is important to me and I know that I need to be consistent if I want to be able to show up for those other appointments. By making exercise a priority, I know that I will always be able to get it done and nothing will conflict with that time slot. Schedule an hour or even 30 minutes where all you plan to do is something active.
A complete overhaul of your life is not likely sustainable. Building a habit needs to start small and with minor changes to your everyday routine. If you want to introduce exercise into your agenda, start by adding in a walk a few days a week. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Make little changes and gradually build up into a more structured exercise plan. If you’re not sure how to go about that, maybe seek a free consult with a personal trainer.
Use a fitness tracker
For someone looking to build a habit of exercise, fitness trackers are great. They provide a daily recap of your activity level and you are even able to track foods on certain models. Being able to set goals and compare your results with others (if you wish) is a great way to motivate and push you to trying a little harder every day.
Join a group
There are many health and fitness groups that inspire their members and provide daily tips and tricks to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. You can find numerous Facebook groups or simply form one of your own with a couple friends. Even group texts help provide support as you look to make a change. Nature Made, America’s #1 best-selling brand for vitamins, minerals and supplements*, also has a program where you can receive daily boost messages by signing up here. In addition to health inspiration and information, you can also see what others are doing to maintain and improve their health.
