Five Things Friday #142

Hey guys — happy Friday!

I’m coming to you from New Jersey where I’ve been since Wednesday for Neil’s cousins’s wedding. If you haven’t been following along on Instagram, you might want to start today because this is when all the festivities start!

Can I count being on vacation as one of my favorites? That’s not really going to help you at all, so I’ll just mention it here and let it go. We head back to Chicago on Sunday after what I’m sure will be an exhausting couple more days. Always good — but tiring!

I hope you have some exciting plans for the weekend — or not because those are actually my favorite kinds. Here’s what I’ve been loving this week!

1. This Close To Happy: A Reckoning with Depression

In anticipation for my solo writing excursion in a couple months, I’ve been reading more books that hit close to home. This way I’m able to tap into emotions that I’m feeling or have felt and get my mind turning for how this book is going to go.

This Close To Happy is a memoir written by Daphne Merkin about her lifelong struggle with depression and how it has affected those around her. It’s written really well and I’m only a couple chapters in, but so far I like it a lot.

2. Montalbano Shampoo Bar at LUSH

LUSH Shampoo Bars always leave my hair feeling super clean. I don’t use them every time I wash my hair, but if I need a good wash I always turn to these. I went in last week and asked what their best cleansing shampoo bar was because with exercising, not washing my hair all the time, and wearing it up, it often feels weighed down since it’s so fine.

They pointed me to the montalbano bar which has lemon, olives, and rosemary in it and definitely leaves my hair feeling super clean. The smell is also perfect for summer and I love that it works so well!

3. Esse Lemon Water

The nice folks at Esse, a local Chicago company, sent me some of their lemon water to try out and just like that shampoo bar, it’s perfect for summer. I used to drink pitchers of lemon water, so this has been really refreshing this week.

4. A Drink with James

I’ve been watching these short videos since they started and they’re always a good look into influencer marketing and current questions that you may have about blogging and working with brands.

A weekly Q+A, A Drink With James is hosted by James Nord, co-founder of Fohr Card. I’ve talked about Fohr Card on here before, most recently for their Instagram tool. James answers questions posed by the community and many of them are helpful in knowing how you should and shouldn’t be working with brands.

5. Sun-In

I started using Sun-In when I was probably in middle school. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a hair lightening spray that is activated by the sun or heat (as in blow dryer).

I used to go overboard when I was younger and it would leave my hair looking slightly orange, but every summer I use a little bit to brighten up my natural color. The winter causes it to darken considerably, so when the sun comes out, this goes in. I only use it a couple times or else it starts to look a little crazy. Who else used to use this?

That’s all I’ve got for this week — let me know some of your favorites in the comments!

Sun In throws me back to 7th grade when I put WAY too much in my brown hair and had orange hair for a whole summer. Lesson learned. Enjoy NJ and looking forward to seeing the dance!

I’ve been known to use Sun In. I am afraid to dye my hair but a little help with highlights is perfect #takemebacktothe1990s
