Five Things Friday #172

Morning (or afternoon depending on when you’re reading this)!

Today is the first full day we have in LA after getting in yesterday evening. We will be here until Monday spending time with Neil’s brother’s family, eating all the donuts and sushi, and playing all the games. Tune in to my Instagram stories if you want to see what’s going on.

I’m looking forward to a little time off work, or writing at least, so that I can relax and Neil and I can spend some time frolicking in the warmer weather. That lead me to picture us skipping through a field, but whatever; it’s better than sitting in front of a computer all day. ๐Ÿ™‚

To wrap up the week, here are some of the things I’ve been loving this week!

1. HIPPEAS

HIPPEAS are a puffed chickpea snack that at first I was dubious about. I’m not a huge “puffed” anything kind of person and prefer to snack on delicious sweets if given the choice. The first time I was sent some samples, Neil ate most of them before I got around to trying them (whoops), but this time I was able to try a couple of their flavors and they’re actually really good! Right now the sriracha flavor is my jam, but I’m slowly working my way through all of them.

2. Runner’s High with Reside Living

As you know, I haven’t run exclusively for a couple years now. It’s sprinkled into workouts here and there, but I haven’t laced up my shoes and spent any length of timeย just running.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to do just that — a 45 min interval treadmill class at a local studio called Runner’s High. For some people, it may sound terrible to run in a room full of treadmills, but there’s a nice running visual on the wall in front of you and if you live somewhere like Chicago, a) outside winter running is terrifying and b) there are no hills to speak of in the city.

In your account you register the speed at which you feel comfortable running a mile with little difficulty and every class you take from there is based on that speed. The treadmills automatically adjust speed and incline as you go through different intervals, but you can always increase or decrease it manually if you need to. I’ve gone twice so far and I didn’t hate it.

This last time I went, I was invited by Reside Living, a local apartment rental agency. Their athletics department is amazing and always has special workouts, events, and partnerships with places in the city. There are tons of properties, and living in any one of them gets you access to the programs. I’d definitely recommend them as a place to start if you’re looking for housing in the city!

3. Nando’s Peri-Peri Sauce

Is Nando’s nationwide? If not, it needs to be. There are a couple locations near me and they serve Peruvian chicken which is absolutely delicious. When they offered to send me some of their sauces, I said YES immediately because I love eating there.

I usually always use the hot, but the other night I made chicken and went with the medium which still burned. Worth it.

4. Goodness Knows Snack Squares

The first time I had this Goodness Knows flavor I ate another bar immediately after. I love chocolate and peanut butter together, but what I liked about these is that there was only a small layer of chocolate on the bottom and the peanut flavor came from actual peanuts instead of peanut butter. It didn’t taste indulgent and I also liked that there are four little squares.

5. Crate & Barrel French Marble Pastry Slab

I had a gift card to Crate & Barrel since Neil and I got married and STILL hadn’t used it. Since I’ve gotten my Sony camera and started working more on my photography, I realized that my current marble square wasn’t long enough for what I wanted to do.

I knew other food bloggers who have recommended this slab, so I went and picked it up. If you get one, make sure you get this pastry slab and not the marble platter which is smaller. When I brought it home, it was only slightly larger than the one I already had. Ugh.

I ordered mine to be picked up in the store, so it was already packaged when I got there. One thing I would have done differently is picked it out myself because each slab looks different. Many of my photos are light and the slab I got is a darker gray than I would have liked, but it will do. It’s also VERY heavy, so keep that in mind as well. I’d put it somewhere you won’t have to move it from place to place to shoot.

    Yessss, I love that there’s a Nando’s fan club up here in the comments. I was introduced to Nando’s while studying in London and was delighted when they first opened a location in DC. Since I’ve moved away, I have attempted to make my own peri peri chicken, but it’s not the same. Maybe buying some Nando’s sauce would help!
