Five Things Friday #21 - Erin's Inside Job

Five Things Friday #21

Hello friends and happy Friday!

Do you have any big plans for the weekend?  It is finally warming up to the 40s (ha) this weekend before dipping back down to a another cold week, so hopefully we can get out and enjoy it! There’s a light festival and a German Christmas market that are both opening this weekend and I’m pretty excited about them.  Until then, however, let’s recap some of my favorite things from this week!

1. Jazz Apples

I made a trip to the Lincoln Park Whole Foods today to check it out. As of 2009, it was the 3rd largest Whole Foods in the country.  I’m not sure if this statistic is still valid, but I can speak to the fact that it is definitely the largest one I have ever been in.  While perusing the aisles, I scoped out the apples to see if they had my favorite.  Not only did they have Jazz apples, (a cross between Gala & Braeburn), but they had organic Jazz apples.

IMG_0395.JPGI don’t purchase a lot of organic produce, but apples are one thing that I try and buy organic since they are one of the higher pesticide-containing foods.  Check out this recommendation for more information (what sweet little babies!):

I love Jazz apples because they taste like a candy apple without the candy coating.  They are crisp, tangy, and have a lot more flavor than other apples I have tried.  I eat them by themselves or slathered in homemade almond butter.

2. New blog friends

As I mentioned yesterday, I met up with Amanda from Adventures with FitNyx for coffee and conversation.  It was really nice making connections with other bloggers and bonus that she is nearby! The blogging community is always so welcoming and I have only had good experiences with everyone I have met.

Apparently this has been the week of the donut.  Neil and I got another one this morning at a new-to-us donut place, Do-Rite Donuts.  I had a vegan baked maple chai spiced donut (top left) that was out of this world.  We have now been to Glazed & Infused (my favorite so far), Firecakes, and now Do-Rite Donuts.  We have one more on our list: The Donut Vault.  Once we sample that one, my donut quest will be complete until we have visitors and then it will rain delicious donuts.

Since we are still in temporary housing without all of my kitchen nuts and bolts, we have been eating out a lot.  It has been a composite of both healthy and not so healthy choices, but I am using this time to weed out places that don’t make the cut so that whenever anyone want to come and visit, I’ll know where to take them.  I have had a lot of good food this past week and have covered a lot of it throughout these week’s posts. I’ll be sure to compile a list of some of my favorite places in Chicago once I have more data.  For now, enjoy this lovely herb garden from LYFE Kitchen again.

5. Whole Foods

I’m bringing it around full circle. I wanted to count Whole Foods as one of my things this week because I have been spending a lot of time in them since moving here.  It is always a good place to grab a healthy, filling lunch and I love all the initiatives that they have.  I have been working on getting in touch with someone from my local store to go over some of them with me, but haven’t been able to connect yet.  When I do I will make sure to share more of that information with you!

I get very excited by bulk bins, so here’s a shot from this morning’s trip:

So that wraps up my favorite things for this week–I hope you have a great weekend and stay warm!

Question of the day: What are some of your favorite things this week?

  1. That herb garden is pretty phenomenal! It is hard when you don’t have a place of your own yet and you still need to eat. At least you have pretty healthy choices. MMM apples! I need to buy more for my apple galette for Thanksgiving 🙂 Are you guys traveling back here or what? Have a great one Erin! Take Care -Iva
