Five Things Friday #95

Greeting from LA! I’ve actually been here since Wednesday and it’s great to just be able to travel without someone looking over my shoulder or me needing to get permission from the state. I’m still adjusting to my FREEEEEEDOM.

Yesterday was the first day of Blogfest and it was so much fun. I’m really looking forward to today and being able to get in a workout with Gunnar Peterson! I’m not staying for the rest of the Idea World convention over the weekend since Neil flies in tonight and we are planning on spending Saturday and Sunday with his brother’s family here in Santa Monica (hellllo farmer’s market!).

I’m going to get right into my favorites from this week. Make sure to leave yours in the comments!

1. Fit Foodie Meals

I had the opportunity to try out a local Chicago meal delivery service right before I left for LA and it was AMAZING.

Shauna, the creator of Fit Foodie, also makes the meals for shows like Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, etc. WUT.

I’ve tried out a lot of the healthy prepared foods here in Chicago and this one is by far the best. Like I want her to make me food all the time. It’s also so beautifully packaged that I spent like 20 minutes just taking different pictures of everything.

She’s in the process of rebranding from the original Fit Chef Shauna to the new Fit Foodie label you can see in the picture below, so if you’re looking for some seriously healthy, but flavorful eats, GET ON IT.

2. Ritual

This one is only local to Chicago (or Toronto), but it’s been great for me to use since I spend so much of my lunch hours in the Loop teaching corporate classes.

Ritual is an app that lets you preorder meals from restaurants close to you, that way you can skip the busy lines and pick it up. Similar to apps like Starbucks and Chipotle (which has a rewards card now, did you know??), it’s easy to use and great if you already know what you want and have to walk there anyway.

The other neat thing is that you can collect points by doing different things like trying a new place, reporting incorrect pricing, ordering again from the same place, etc. This allows you to save money on future orders once you accumulate a certain number of points and rewards.

3. NOW Foods Mango Slices

You all know about my obsession with TJs mango slices. As part of NOW’s influencer program, I was able to try out a bag of theirs this week when my order came and MAN. These are also incredibly addictive.

They’re thicker and a little softer than TJs, but the only ingredients are mangos and evaporated cane juice which makes for a delicious (and quickly devoured) snack.

4. The Girls by Emma Cline

I had seen a lot of hype for this book starting a couple months back when it popped up in my daily Skimm. I thought the synopsis sounded intriguing, but I don’t think the book had actually been published yet. It’s Cline’s first book, which is also what garnered a lot of attention.

Lately, I saw a lot more mentions of it, so I bought it and told Neil that he bought it for me for my birthday. I started it on Tuesday and finished it the next day on the plane. Whoops.

The Girls tells the story of a 14 year old girl in the 60s who falls under the influence of a group of girls who ultimately wind up belonging to a group strikingly similar to the Manson family. I really liked the writing as it was filled with such vivid imagery and a lot of similes and metaphors. I can’t even really describe what drew me in, but I haven’t read a style like that in a long time and it was refreshing.

5. Blogfest

I have one more day to go at Blogfest and I can’t wait to get it started! It’s been so great to reunite with old blog friends and make plenty of new ones as well.

Last year I was in such a different place mentally and emotionally with everything that was going on in my marriage, and this year I feel much more free, outgoing, and confident in this blog and my brand as a whole.

  1. I’ve been DYING to read that book. I’m so glad to hear it’s a good one! I’m so overwhelmed by all of the books by my nightstand waiting to be read!
