Five Things Friday #268
I hope you all had a wonderful week. Neil had a lighter work week than normal, so we were able to spend more time together as a family which was really nice. Yesterday we all got to go to Target! SO EXCITING I KNOW. I'm expecting our last big furniture delivery today and then (fingers crossed) I can finally work on all the little decorating that I've been wanting to do. The dresser for Miles' room finally arrived this week too after almost a month, so that was another exciting thing. I was so pumped for it to get here until I realized how much I do not like putting dressers together. Most furniture I love, but man, dressers are so frustrating and tedious to me. Thankfully, Neil and I did it together one of the nights and now it's out of the way.
I've been trying to find activities for Miles and I in the afternoon since he's usually awake for around six hours until bedtime. It's too hot to take him hiking right now, so lately I've just been going on longer drives to do things like get fresh fruit ice cream. We went to a farm stand the other day which was honor system-based (what?), enjoyed our peach ice cream, and then stopped at a big local park to play in the water for a little bit. I like exposing him to new things and it also gives me an opportunity to drive around and explore the new area we live in. If you guys have any other ideas of things Miles and I can do together, let me know!
In wrapping up the week, here are some of my favorite things. Let me know some of yours!

1. Kamado Joe Grill/Smoker
Now that we are living the suburban life in North Carolina, Neil obviously found it imperative to research and invest in a grill. The options were really between gas and charcoal, and we decided that because we really like using our sous vide for most meats (which can then be quickly seared inside after cooking), having the charcoal option would give a different flavor if we wanted to grill instead.
What I think sold Neil on this grill in particular (yes, we ordered it on Amazon and they delivered it for us!) is that it's excellent for smoking meats and would thankfully spare us from buying a separate smoker. I got a lot of questions on Instagram about whether it was the same as the Big Green Egg and essentially yes, but (as Neil informed me), this grill has improved upon the Egg, while the Egg has stayed the same over many years. So it has all the features of the Egg, but has improved upon some of the areas where it is lacking and they continue to improve as time goes on.
It's a very nice grill (we got the Classic I), and Neil is really, really happy with it. We have smoked pork shoulder on it twice and grilled chicken here and there and everything has been really delicious. If you're in the market for a new grill, definitely do some research and check this one out!
2. Temperature Probes
No grill is complete without accesories (apparently), and I think of all the gadgets Neil bought, these are actually the most useful. Before, he would have to go outside repeatedly to check the temperature on the grill when we were smoking something. With these, there are two probes -- one to measure the temperature inside the grill and one to put in the meat to measure internal temperature.
This way, he's able to keep a monitor inside that lets him know both tempertures. You can also set temperatures so that the monitor beeps if it goes higher than what is set. For example, when smoking pork the other day, he didn't want the temperature higher than 250. He set a limit for that and when it beeped, it meant that the internal temperature of the grill had exceeded that number and he would have to go our and fiddle to bring it back down. It's a handy tool if you don't want to be going in and out all the time.
Even if you don't have a grill, you can use it in your oven if you want to have a more accurate picture of temperatures.
3. Belvita Blueberry Flavor
I was first introduced to Belvita biscuits on a plane. I thought they were delicious, but then I'd get off and forget about them entirely. Neil's parents always bring over the cinnamon ones, but those go to Miles since I'm not a huge cinnamon-flavored food person.
I was in Target the other day and saw these on an endcap. I grabbed the blueberry ones immediately because they're just SO GOOD. Miles and I have been splitting them in the morning and they're a great addition to tea or coffee. I know they have other flavors -- what are some of your favorites??
4. New Pumice Stone
When we moved, my pumice stone didn't make it in the trip. I kept meaning to buy a new one and I finally remembered during one of my Target trips. Before, I had a small one that fit in the palm of my hand, but the only one I could find this time was bigger with a handle.
During one of my 2 am pregnancy insomnia-induced showers, I figured I'd give it a shot and it was MIRACULOUS. I don't know if I had had my old one for so long or what, but I was amazed at how smooth this new one made my feet. I found this one in the foot section at Target (insoles/lotions/creams/etc), so if you happen to see it, grab one!
5. Pure Protein Peanut Butter Cup Flavor
Neil grabbed these when we first came to North Carolina and were staying at his cousin's house and I've been buying them ever since. I'm not the biggest fan of this brand only because the other chocolate/peanut butter flavor tasts a little too artificial for me, BUT I really like this one a lot. It reminds me of the old Power Bar Protein bars that have since been reformulated and taste nothing like they used to 🙁
I know not everyone is a protein bar fan, but I was really happy with this find and it's a good option for me if I need to grab something and go!
That's all for this week friends! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
