Five Things Friday #271
I hope everyone had a good week. I've been occupying myself with a project in Miles' room (more on that below) which has helped the days go by a little quicker. Neil's brother came to visit over the weekend, so it was nice to see him again and have him play with Miles while I accidentally fell asleep on the floor of the living room (whoops). We have a little less than two weeks before we need to say goodbye to our house for a month and the renovations begin. I can't wait to see everything when we finally get back home!
This morning I have a virtual appointment with the midwife group I'm seeing, which will be the first time we have connected since they discovered my placenta previa at my 20-week ultrasound. I talked briefly with an OB that I had never met, who gave me the diagnosis, but I haven't circled back with the midwives to see if we need to make any changes to my plan of care. I'm assuming that we won't right now and will wait until my updated ultrasound in October, but it'll be nice to chat and figure out next steps.
That's really all that's going on this week. We have a landscaping company coming to replace our backyard with turf rather than the dead pine needles that we have now, and that should take a couple days. Hopefully Donut will like the backyard more and it'll be a better playing space for Miles as he gets older and outgrows his fear of grass (ha). I hope everyone is hanging in there and has a great weekend!

1. Sunday Candle Co.
So it's funny because I stumbled across these candles by accident. A friend of mine had posted on IG about a similarly-named company and when searching for them, I went to this account instead. I LOVED the aesthetic of their page and their candles, and kept returning to the website to look at all their scents. I'm a sucker for a good looking candle.
Since I usually don't order things like candles without being able to smell them first, I was hesitant, but sent a message asking for recommendations based on what I typically like. They got back to me quickly and were so nice. I ordered two, but unfortunately one came broken in the mail. A replacement is on the way, and both smell amazing. Definitely check out their website and if one sounds good to you, order it!
2. Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews
I'm in a local mom's group on Facebook, and each day the admin posts a random question like "what was your favorite part of the day," etc. The other night she asked about favorite books and since I love reading so much, I made sure to check out all the responses.
Someone mentioned Flowers in the Attic and I stopped scrolling because I had completely forgotten that book and my teenage obsession with the series. I could barely even remember what it was about, but the emotions that it evoked were brought up right away. I added it to my Amazon cart and bought it immediately because I knew I needed to read it again.
I started it this week and it's definitely still captivating. I feel like it's even a little harder to read now that I'm a mother because as a teenager, all I could empathize with were the children. Now I find myself asking how a mother could let these things happen to her children and it's a whole mess of emotions. If you're not familiar with the book, check out the summary on Amazon (and probably buy it too). 🙂
3. Painting Miles' Room
I don't know what has come over me, but I decided to embark on a room-painting adventure. Have I ever painted a room before? No. Am I slightly terrified? Yes.
I had an idea of a mural I wanted on one of Miles' walls because while I do love white as an aesthetic, it just felt so white that it was almost washed out. I wanted to add some color, so I searched Pinterest until I found mountain mural decals that looked like a great idea. I then went to Etsy and found some great ones, but the dimensions weren't quite right and obviously the bigger the decals, the more expensive they became. I went back to Pinterest and clicked on some of the DIY posts and realized that it really wasn't quite as hard as I thought to paint them on myself.
So I have everything taped and ready and am working on it today and tomorrow. I'll keep you updated on the final product!
4. The Boys Season 2 on Amazon Prime
Season 2 of The Boys was released last Friday (only three episodes at a time, unfortunately) and I am here for it. It's a show about superheroes, but way more adult, violent, and screwed up. Since there haven't been new movies to watch lately, having a show that Neil and I really enjoyed come back on felt great and I'm excited to continue watching it.
5. Venison Every Day by Allie Doran
My friend Allie (@missallieskitchen) just released her first cookbook and I couldn't be more proud of her! What is so unique about it is that it focuses on meals prepared with venison since her husband is a hunter and brings home a good amount each year.
Obviously, not everyone has access to a freezer of deer meat, so if you buy the book, she can send you a list of substitutions with other meat. The photos are beautiful, the recipes are amazing, and I'm just really proud of her for working on this and getting it done while she was also pregnant with her first baby. If this sounds like it would be good for you or as a gift, I definitely recommend!
That's all for this week friends! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
