Five Things Friday #281

Happy Friday!

This morning is my weekly follow up ultrasound, so I don't have any new updates since last Friday on the baby front. I think the only thing I didn't mention last time was that we have an official date scheduled for surgery -- December 2. That means there will be a baby here in less than two weeks! I think having so much time to work on processing things has helped and I feel more at peace about everything that's going on. That doesn't mean that there still won't be emotions and tears, but the overall feelings are better. My mom and sister are coming for Thanksgiving and my brother and his girlfriend are postponing their trip since they live in Seattle. My mom and sis have been being super careful from the get-go, will be getting tested, and will be driving only a couple of hours to get here, so I feel better about that. They will be staying through until the following weekend so that they can help out with Miles and Neil (ha) while I'm in the hospital. It'll be nice to see them since it's been at least a year and my mom hasn't seen Miles since he was about a month old!

Going forward, I'm hoping to finish scheduling posts through the end of January so that I can actually take some time off with this baby. Right now, I have posts scheduled for every Monday which have been updated and will be republished from old content. I'm just about through with new content on Wednesdays throughout December, so I still have about five more to get done before baby comes. Depending on my energy level, I may have to skip Friday posts for a bit since those are something that are written in real time and I'm just not sure what real time will look like in a couple weeks. I'm still debating that, but if I do have to skip them, I'll still have daily stories on Instagram so you can see what's going on.

As always, thank you guys for all the support on here and through all this craziness. I really appreciate it and can't wait to share our new addition with you when she gets here! I hope you have a great weekend and a great Thanksgiving next week if you're in the U.S. It's obviously a little different this year, but I'm hoping you're able to enjoy the little things. Lots of love.

1. Tolkien quote print from Etsy

This is one of my favorite quotes and I thought it would go perfectly in Miles' room with his mountain mural. I love going on adventures outdoors and taking him along with me, so when I found this print on Etsy, I bought it immediately.

I wish that it could have been a digital file that I could have had printed myself, but I'm also for supporting small businesses this season if I can, so I don't feel too bad about it. The print comes without a frame, but I just grabbed one from the At Home store nearby for $8 and voila!

2. New haircut for Miles

We've been cutting his hair at home since he was a baby and needed some mullet trimming or the like, but he's only ever gone somewhere to get his hair cut once before this. If you remember, it didn't go well, he cried the whole time, and I felt like the stylist was just trying to quickly chop his hair so it was over. I didn't love that haircut, so I was nervous about taking him somewhere else and having the same experience. His hair was getting really shaggy, though, so I reached out in a FB group and got some recommendations.

I went to a local place called Grace Hair and it was just one woman who was more than accommodating to him not being the biggest fan of haircuts. He was able to sit on my lap, watch a cartoon (which he only half paid attention to), and wasn't quite as hysterical as the last time. I also was able to show him videos of himself on my phone that he likes to watch on repeat, so that helped him stop squirming for a lot of it.

Overall, it was done in 15 minutes, he got some candy, and was totally fine afterwards. I like this haircut much more - even if it does make him look older. Good thing there's another baby on the way - HA.

3. The Undoing on HBO

Neil and I started this after we finished Euphoria. We thought it was only three episodes because it was recommended to us and we thought that it had already been out for awhile. We got through the three and were like um, this is not going to wrap up the storyline. Upon further research, it's currently airing and there's a new episode every Sunday. Whoops. 🙂

Regardless, we are sticking with it because it's actually pretty good. I have my theories about how it will play out and if it winds up that way, then I'll probably be disappointed, but oh well.

From the website:

A therapist's life unravels after she learns that her husband might be responsible for a widespread disaster.

Vague, but it has some good twists, although I found them to be pretty predictable. Doesn't mean it's not entertaining, but it's not super surprising. (I'm doing a great job selling this haha).

4. New towels

We had some towels we really liked that were thin, but super absorbent. Sadly, over time they started to smell musty even after washing regularly and we decided to replace them. Neil, as always, did product research and sent me a bunch of links to options (ha).

We settled on these ones by Everplush and I really love them. They're absorbent, soft, and big -- basically everything I want in a towel. I like plush towels, but I feel like they're usually thick and then not very absorbent. These are just the right amount of thickness to feel plush, but not overwhelming. Basically, they've been working really well for a couple weeks now and I love them.

5. Retaking the 5 Love Languages Quiz

If you're not familiar with the 5 Love Languages, they were originally defined in a book of the same name. They became so popular that now there are courses, a website, etc. to help improve relationships.

It was important for Neil and I to understand how we each want to receive love, because it was causing some conflict early in our relationship. I was trying to show him love the way that I like to receive it, but that wasn't how he did and then I would be left feeling slighted or unappreciated. Once I understood what things made him feel loved, I was able to do those for him and it really helped things.

Lately, we've been bickering more over little things and we weren't sure what was going on. I had a hunch that maybe our love languages had shifted, so I suggested that we quickly take the quiz again to see. Sure enough, both of our main love languages have changed over the almost 10 years we have been together. What served us earlier in our relationship no longer holds as much weight, so it was really important for us to understand that. It's also helped the little fights because now I understand that quality time is important to him, so when we hang out I make sure that my phone is away and he has my full attention.

It doesn't have to be only for romantic partners, there are a variety of quizzes to choose from if you're interested!

That's all for this week friends! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  1. I’ll be watching for baby news after December 2nd. 🙂

And learning about love languages is SO helpful. Mine definitely changed when I got married and it’s good to know it might happen again as we progress in years. As always, thanks for sharing honestly for the benefit of your readers!
