I may be a little behind on this, but even though I discovered Farmer’s Fridge when I moved to Chicago, I hadn’t had the chance to try it out until yesterday. I live next door to a mall and while exploring one day I found out that Farmer’s Fridge had been waiting for me all along in the food court. So close!
Farmer’s Fridge is a vending machine of salads. There are many different options to choose from which are all listed on the wall next to the machine.
The premise is very simple: select your salad and order it from the touch screen menu. There are also smaller items such as fruit salad or chicken to add if you want more protein. The calories of each salad are displayed on the menu and the ingredient list is on the back of each container you order. The touch screen also has more detailed information about each selection.
I chose the Detox Salad which contained kale, quinoa, sprouts, fennel, pineapple, blueberries, and white beans. I only used a small amount of the cider vinegar-lemon dressing, dumped it all in a bowl at home and went to town. If you decide to eat it while out there are utensils and bowls available at the vending machine.
I also spied some cauliflower fried rice which I have made before and always enjoy. I got that as well because the Detox Salad only has 300 calories and I need something a little more substantial for lunch. I loved that it had no oil and no frying and very minimal ingredients. Score.
Everything is made fresh daily and I actually ended up hovering around like a weirdo because when I showed up there was someone restocking the machine. I pretended to be busy but I was really just trying to eat everything.
There are also some drink options that are available, but I wasn’t prepared to spend $6 on a protein drink when my salad was only $5. Maybe another day. They had a pumpkin protein drink that caught my eye for sure.
Overall, I really like the convenience and health factor of Farmer’s Fridge and now that I know it is right next door I may frequent it more often. My only word of advice is to grab something before lunchtime because you can end up with slim pickings if other people get there first.

On a non food related note, I started teaching the 6 am and 7 am classes at Sweat today, microphone and all. I’ve hit the big leagues. Somewhere around the end of the month I will be programming and teaching my “graduation class” which is a free class open to all. If you are in the Chicago area, make sure you find time to come out and get a great workout with yours truly. I will be sure to give you more details as I get them, but just to be safe you should probably keep every evening open around the end of the month so that there’s no possibility of a conflict.
Also an update on filming outside my building: I took this picture yesterday while I hovered at my window like a creepy old lady. It got pretty noisy yesterday which I’m sure upset that man’s cat even more.
Today I am linking up with Sara from Lake Shore Runner for Tried It Tuesday. Have a great day!
