Favorite Clothing Items: Second Trimester
I have about a month to go until I get into the third trimester, and I wanted to get this post written so that I could share some of the clothing items that I’ve found to be helpful during the second.
I’m in a good spot where I can still wear a lot of my regular tops, and it wasn’t until a couple weeks ago that I realized that I really did have to do something about things like pants and bras. My style may be slightly atypical since I basically wear activewear 24/7 given my job outside the house and then comfy clothes when working from home, but nevertheless this may help some people who are struggling with what to wear as clothes start to get tighter.
Pants
This is where I struggled the most. I work out about 5 times a week and typically wear compression tights because they are the most effective for the types of workouts I do. That meant that there already wasn’t a lot of room for stretch, and when the baby started growing it got uncomfortable pretty quickly.
I only own one pair of maternity leggings, and the other ones I simply sized up in. I’m not sure if that will change in the coming months, but for right now it’s working!
1. Lululemon Align Leggings
These are AMAZING. I have them in a size up, but honestly I think that the material is stretchy enough to work in my regular size if I had gone with that. I have literally been living in these whenever I need to wear real pants or go train clients because they are so soft and comfortable. The waistband is high, but doesn’t cut into anything.
Although they’re not my typical material for working out in, I have worn them a handful of times when I’ve run out of clothes that fit me. They work well in a pinch, but there are still other fabrics I prefer for getting sweaty.
2. Koral Maternity Lustrous Leggings
A friend actually gifted these Koral leggings to me after her pregnancy and I really love them. Several of my friends actually own the non-maternity version and love them as well.
3. Athleta Contender Tight
I like my Athleta tights a lot, but needed to go up a size. I have a couple pairs of these contender tights now and they’re great for high-impact workouts. Bonus: they just released a ton of new bright color options for spring if that’s your jam!
4. Old Navy Plush-Knit Lounge Joggers
These are the pants that I wear nonstop around the house. I actually owned a pair from a year or two ago and asked for more for Christmas. The ones I owned before getting pregnant are the same size as the newer pairs I got because I wanted them to be a little cozy. They also sit under my belly so the size isn’t really much of an issue. Just know that they run a little big, so you may want to size down or not and enjoy all of the super soft coziness. Plus they have pockets which I’ve realized is more important to me than I thought!
I have also heard great things about Old Navy’s maternity line in general, but I haven’t had a chance to stop in there yet to check it out. If you have any recommendations from there (or anywhere really), let me know in the comments!
Tops
I’m going to be honest with you — I don’t know the last time I wore an actual bra. One hundred percent of the time I wear a sports bra because my chest is never something I really need to concern myself about. Now that there’s finally something there (!!), I’m starting to outgrow many of the sports bras I currently have, but I’m still not inclined to make the switch to real bras.
I’ve started feeling like I need a little more support, but they’re still not out of control, so I’ve simply been buying larger or more supportive sports bras. I actually got a couple great ones at Marshall’s the other day — two for $15 by 90 Degree by Reflex (image below). I have a couple workout tanks from them too that I really like, so my advice is to check out the activewear section of places like TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, and Marshall’s for some cheap finds!
(I realize most of the pants I advocated for were more expensive and my tops are not, and that’s what I’ve found to work best for me. It’s more important for me to invest in leggings based on my activity level and job vs. what I’m wearing on top!)
In terms of “real” tops, I ordered one from ASOS Maternity and it’s what I wore in these pictures:
Their whole maternity section is adorable and affordable and I’ve been searching the site for more things to buy which I don’t normally do. Definitely advise!
As I mentioned at the beginning, my shirts and tanks are all still fitting pretty well, but I’m sure that will change as the weeks go on. I’ll be back to update you guys on any changes I need to make as we progress!
Let me know some of your favorite maternity clothing finds below!
Love the simple and minimal pieces you’ve got, Erin! They look really comfortable too. I didn’t expect maternity clothes to look so good! ๐

How exciting! The baby is growing and you get new clothes. When I was pregnant 26 years ago, when I say that it seems unreal, but it’s true, anyways. I didn’t get maternity clothes till late in the third trimester. I got my clothes from Lane Bryant, if it’s still in business, I don’t know, but it’s a plus sized store with such cute options. I gave my maturity clothes to my mom after I delivered my daughter. It was a win all the way around. I can’t wait to see the baby and the transition of your blog. Are you going to start a new one or change your theme?

I was pregnant during the blazing hot summer, so I lived in Old Navy maternity tanks and lightweight skirts. Their maternity skinny pants were surprisingly good quality too! Target was my go-to as well.
You look great! Iโm excited to follow your experience with motherhood. Also, if you havenโt already lined up a post, Iโd love to hear your thoughts on body image during pregnancy.

OMG, Aligns are AMAZING! I teach at Life Time and they partnered with lulu for some branded items, and the aligns were one of the legging options… my first pair and I’m DYING for another one! When they say “naked sensation” that’s literally what it’s like. I forget I have them on. I don’t know how workout fabric can be so soft, but it is and they’re worth every penny. I also am obsessed with Athleta’s contender tights! I have black, and just bought the bright yellow ones bc bright spring colors, and that yellow is gorgeous! ๐ ๐ Great round up Erin!
I am in my third trimester right now and still working out about 4-5 times a week. My boobs only just recently grew out of control where I realized, “hey… I need a friggin bra” but the maternity workout leggings from a-glow (Target brand) are awesome and comfortable! The bra thing, I still am searching for ones that don’t push the girls so close together that I grow a new cleavage. If I find one I will let you know! The one I like I got from TJ Maxx and it just happens to be a random New Balance sports bra.
