Chocolate Blueberry Basil Smoothie
Happy Thursday! It is hot out today and I love it. My mom used to call me a lizard when I was younger because I would always be sunning myself when the weather got warm. Hopefully there will be some time left on my break after I finish this so that I can get some color back on my vampire-esque skin.
I have been talking about this smoothie for some time now and I needed to finally share it with you. As you may know, I am a very habitual creature and have been having the same green smoothie of kale, pineapple, and chia seeds for probably about a year now. I go through these phases and then will abruptly stop and switch to something else for a prolonged period of time.
This smoothie is my new obsession. Once the weather warms up I grow basil because it is my FAVORITE HERB EVER. I randomly got the idea for this smoothie while daydreaming about basil and I can say that it is one of the few original concoctions that I have come up with. I am usually inspired by other recipes I see, but this sprung from my desire to consume basil in every meal possible.
I have been using chocolate protein powder, but I’m sure that it would be equally delicious with vanilla (or none at all). Let me know if you make any tweaks and how it turns out! This smoothie ends up being pretty thick from the powder and the chia seeds and could technically be my breakfast, but I just bought 36 eggs from Costco so I have been having both every morning. It’s good for me to have a large breakfast because then I don’t get as hungry throughout the day and don’t have to rely on so many snacks. If you don’t want it to be so thick you can either add less chia seeds or more liquid.
There is also a whole rack of greens in here that you can’t even taste. I don’t always get to eat as many greens as I’d like in a day, so I like knowing that I’ve consumed roughly an entire forest every morning. I use frozen blueberries, so if you use fresh ones you will have to add ice in order to experience the extreme refreshment.
Chocolate Blueberry Basil Smoothie
- 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
- 2 Tbsp chia seeds
- 2-3 cups
gigantic handfulsof your green of choice (feel free to mix it up) - about 10 basil leaves (more or less depending on your love affair with basil)
- 1 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 cup (approx) of water**
- Put powder and seeds in first so that they don’t explode in the blender when you turn it on. Add other ingredients and blend until smooth. Devour.
**You can substitute water for milk/non-dairy milk if you’d like as well. I haven’t done this yet but I’m sure it would be delicious.
Question of the day: Have you made this smoothie yet? Why not? Do you also love basil? It’s the best (not a question)!
I’m not sure how I feel about blueberries and basil but I’ll take your word for it 🙂 Glad you’ve created a concoction you enjoy! Happy Friday Erin -Iva
YUMMMM!!!! I’m absolutely going to have to try this! I’ve never thought about putting basil in my smoothies before!
Um. Yum. Totally creeping on this post from your most recent post, and I want this in my life now. I’m also a creature of habit with food, and I think it stems from overall food sensitivities. So when I find a food I love and doesn’t make my stomach feel like the devil is literally living inside of it, I have it on repeat.
